Everyone loves the cinema, there’s nothing better than curling up in one of the big cinema seats with a huge bag of popcorn and finally seeing that new blockbuster release you’ve been dying to see.

However, when films are taken outside, to watch in the open air under the stars, the whole cinematic experience becomes more magical and enjoyable. Outdoor cinemas have transformed a favorite rainy day activity into something new and exciting, and many companies all over the world have tapped into creating outdoor cinema events that the audience will never forget.

Here’s our pick of the world’s best outdoor cinemas.

St George Open Air Cinema, Sydney

Just look at the backdrop for that, need we say more? Their website says ‘the world’s most beautiful cinema’ and we definitely agree with that. Behind the cinema screen the views of the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the Harbour are postcard pretty and you’d be forgiven if you got distracted once or twice during the film to just soak in the view. Screenings draw around 2,000 audience members and you can spend the evening snacking and drinking from the harbourside bar and restaurant that have some amazing food and drinks on offer. The cinema season takes place over January and February (Australian summer) and tickets are on sale now.

This years films include: The Martian, Sicario, Trainwreck, Everest, Spectre, Daddy’s Home

Tickets $32-34

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado

Again, we’ve picked an outdoor cinema with pretty spectacular surroundings. This amphitheatre is naturally formed by two 300-foot sandstone monoliths (a geological feature that consists of a single massive stone, for all you non-geological experts) and pines, prairies and geological wonders surround the area. You can bring your own food and drinks to the screening and they usually have a band that plays before the movie starts. We will say though, if you want a decent spot arrive early as it’s first come first served for seats and we recommend bringing a few cushions and blankets, as sitting on a rock hard surface can get a little uncomfortable.

Previous films include: The Shining, Jurassic Park, Pretty Woman, Magic Mike, Jaws

Tickets $12

Hot Tub Cinema, London

If you’re not that bothered by amazing views and spectacular surroundings then we’ve found the perfect outdoor cinema for you, Hot Tub Cinema. This cinema invites you and your friends to spend an evening soaking in a rooftop hot tub whilst watching movies on a giant screen. You and up to 5 other friends can book out a hot tub and spend the night relaxing and enjoying the movie, whilst waiters come and serve drinks and snacks directly to your tub. Audience members are encouraged to sing, dance and get involved with the film so if you’re after a quiet night of movie watching then this probably isn’t the outdoor cinema for you.

Previous films include: Pitch Perfect, Back to the Future, The Lion King, Free Willy, Spiceworld – The Movie

£70 – Pair of tickets £210 – Private hot tub

Rooftop Film Club, London, New York, LA

With the Rooftop Film Club now open in three of the coolest cities in the world you know you’re going to have a good evening. From May until September audience members can sit back and relax in comfy deck chairs with their wireless headphones, feast on fresh food, movie-themes cocktails and experience films like never before above the busy city streets. Don’t worry if it rains as ponchos and blankets are handed out free of charge on rainy days.
