To celebrate National Sister’s Day on the 6th August, we reveal our favorite duos in fashion, music and art who are inspiring us at RED. From an emerging rock band energizing us with their positive girl-power vibes, to two artists sharing their sisterly love through their bright artwork, these sibling pairs are giving us all the right vibes this National Sister’s Day.
Tina & Nikita Sutradhar, Fashion Designers at Miuniku
Tina and Nikita grew up in the bustling city of Mumbai so it is no surprise that their designs have an urban, city-ready feel to them. Inspired in part by the rapid globalization of the last century, Nikita and Tina create apparel for the modern woman. They both studied firstly in Mumbai, before heading to the London College of Fashion where Nikita completed a degree in Womenswear and Tina a degree in Fashion Marketing. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, becoming semi-finalists in the H&M Design Awards, and being awarded the Special Jury Prize at the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers in 2014. This creative sister act has successfully blended together their ideas, inspirations, and complementary skills to construct a highly polished womenswear brand, with a truly international outlook, reflective of their own experiences.
Why they are RED…
We love Miuniku because of its ageless mind-set. Designs are contemporary but with a truly multi-generational appeal. We love the vibrant flashes of color, contrasting textures and shapes Tina and Nikita use throughout their collections. Regardless of age and style, pieces by Miuniku will work into the wardrobes of many a modern RED woman.
Alisa & Cristal Ramirez, Drummer/Singer & Lead singer/Guitarist in The Aces
Alisa and Cristal Ramirez made their childhood dreams come true by turning their backyard band into a reality. Along with two close friends, Mckenna and Katie (who they’ve been been playing music with since the tender age of 12 years old!!) the Ramirez sisters formed The Aces (originally the Blue Aces) and signed with Red Bull Records in 2016. Having played many a local gig in their native Utah, the girl band are now on track for bigger and better things (Red Bull are known for signing acts with serious credibility). Their contagious pop/rock with slightly whimsical vibes, their killer style and their strong friendship captivates audiences and the band are quickly gathering fans the world over. The sisters and the other girls obviously have a strong bond, something they want to extend to fans too – the video for recent single ‘Baby Who’ shows the band running around, having fun and generally causing mischief in the area they grew up in, showcasing their lifelong friendship for all the world to see.
Why they are RED…
Together Alisa and Cristal form half of the coolest new girl band straight out of Utah. Not only are their indie pop/rock vibes right up our street, but these girls have some serious rock star style cred too – think grungy ripped jeans and vintage band tees topped with glamorous leopard fur jackets and platform heels. Not only do the sisters have a strong bond, but the whole band feel like a proper family, whilst all the time rocking a we don’t give a damn attitude. Great music, great personality and great style, what’s not to love about these girls?
Grace Leigh & Tessa Rose Ryser, Artists at Sister Artists
There are many similarities to the Ryser sisters; Grace and Tessa both live in Salt Lake City, they have both graduated from Utah State University with art degrees, they are both artists who love using vibrant, bright color in their work, and they both use people as the main subjects of their pieces. Despite this affinity, the Ryser sisters’ portraits are enthralling in totally unique ways. Where Grace favors acrylic and marker, Tessa prefers using acrylic and oil. Where Grace uses detailed illustration techniques in as the base of her work, Tessa favors a more abstract, painterly style. Whichever form you prefer, these Utah sisters are the epitome of a creative sisterly bond – they even have a joint Instagram account!
Why they are RED…
Much like sisters often do in real life, Grace and Tessa’s art styles complement each other without mimicking each other’s work. We love that they are on the same wavelength and feed into each other’s inspiration. We appreciate the detail and emotion they capture in their portraits of people and love the way they dynamically use color!
