November Artist of the Month | Mr Cenz/ Artist of the month
Mr Cenz is a London based graffiti artist who has been scribbling on surfaces since 1988. His distinctive work can currently be seen all over streets of the world, especially in his hometown of London. It features layers of intricate and flowing letterforms, shapes and line work, which are abstracted in a unique and aesthetically pleasing way. His style is full of funk and movement, and fuses different skills together such as realism and graffiti letterforms. His work is open to individual interpretation and has been described as “surrealist graffiti art for the soul”.
What inspires you?
My inspiration comes from my drive to always improve and create artwork on another level. Im trying to push graffiti/street art into the future with my style and am always trying to blow peoples minds with innovative techniques. For my portraits my first inspiration is a great reference photo, with great lighting. This is all I use to create my works. From just looking at the image I breakdown the shapes and forms in my own unique way, which is all created in a spontaneous and freestyle action. The result is a mysterious, psychedelic and futuristic version.
My portraits are created in a distinctive sci-fi and cosmic-fueled styling, seemingly imbued with a translucent quality. The beautiful and strong females I portrays are full of soul, feeling, pride and power whilst maintaining a mysterious and suductive air.
Where can people find your work?
I am currently in Basel, Switzerland painting a mural for Urban Art Festival and I have been lucky enough to travel lots over the last few years to some amazing places. I have murals in Berlin, Denver, Miami, Paris etc etc. Of course as Im London based I have lots of murals there too in places like Shoreditch, Brixton and Walthamstow.
I currently have a solo show called ‘Expansions’ at Galerie Bartoux in Honfleur, France running until the new year. I have a feature in the latest edition of Stuart Urban Art magazine and Im working on lots of cool projects at home and abroad in the next few months. Im always busy.
Why is Mr Cenz RED?
We love that Mr Cenz uses music to inspire his art! He first got into graffiti when he discovered hip-hop culture in the 1980s. Since then he has been experimenting with his art style ever since, but this influence is still prevalent in his work. Most recently his focus has shifted to female faces, creating vibrant and abstract portraiture on all forms of canvas. His style still retains it’s distinctive street-cool vibe, whilst he manages to capture the details and emotions in the faces of his subjects in a more traditional manner. His street art has real feeling and we love it!
