November Artist of the Month | William Goodman/ Artist of the month
William Goodman is a mixed-media artist and muralist from Jackson, Mississippi. Goodman’s artwork reflects his fascination with pop culture and urban decay. His paintings and murals are inspired by street art, advertisements, typography, and illustrations. With a background in abstract painting and graphic design, Goodman’s broad range of influences include Rauschenberg, Basquiat, Warhol, Pollack, David Carson, Hannah Hoch, Alessandro Michele, and Nicola Formichetti.
The layers of Goodman’s paintings reveal his creative process. Each piece of his artwork tells an individual story. He approaches a blank surface with an initial idea, experimenting and creating with no restrictions. As his paintings develop, some remain more abstract, while others feature imagery, typography, and collage. Goodman uses a variety of mixed media techniques.
Goodman is known for his use of graffiti and imagery in his artwork. His work always has a contemporary edge to it and you can see his interest and passion for pop culture and urban decay in his work.
What inspires you?
“I have always been inspired by the way fashion designers create wearable art. Earlier this year, I was asked to paint a pair of classic Chuck Taylors for an art auction. For years I have worked on canvas and wood panels, and I have created murals. And yet, as I painted those shoes, I could see far beyond the restriction of two-dimensional surfaces. Now I am inspired to explore ways that my art can go further. I see my art in motion, and having my work on clothing, bags, and shoes means it is constantly moving. I love that aspect of fashion design.”
Work we love…
Why he is RED?
William Goodman is our RED Artist of the Month because we love how he uses something that surrounds him in every day life, pop culture, and mixes it with urban decay to create colorful and detailed works of art. We also love how Goodman doesn’t limit himself to just one form of art; he incorporates paint, imagery and graffiti to add layers to the story that his artwork is telling.
