Fashion extends far beyond the runway and as events of that nature go, they really don’t come much quirkier than this. In January 2016 Scotland will host its first annual ‘Best Moustache and Beard’ competition.
This unique event, created by Edinburgh hairdresser Garry McGill, celebrates everything we love about well-groomed facial hair from the styled moustache to the freestyle goatee and everything in between. It will also showcase live music, Scottish-made products, food and drink.
Scotland is the latest nation to jump on this trend with the United States and New Zealand among the other countries already holding this unique, yet popular, tournament. There is already a British Beard and Moustache Championship which took place in Bath in September, while the 2015 US national Beard and Moustache championship took place in Brooklyn on November 7th. Both Canada and Germany have also hosted competitions in the past.
Like any competition, there is also the global title to play for. The competition this year took place in the alpine village of Leogang, Austria in October. The world competition has long been dominated by the Germans, but this year the American team won the most categories. The 2014 national champion, Madison Rowley from Oregon, won the highly contested ‘full beard’ category, with many others from Team USA gaining perfect scores. The biennial World Beard and Moustache Championships takes place in Austin, Texas in 2017, followed by Antwerp, Belgium in 2019.
