All good things must come to an end and as we reach October we say goodbye to another season in Ibiza. But for many Ibiza lovers, the month of October is not the end, it’s when many of the biggest parties in Ibiza just get started. The infamous Ibiza closing parties, where some of the biggest names in dance music perform to sell out crowds. So as this well-loved time approaches we asked music journalist and editor of Uneek Ibiza, Andrew Darwin, to reflect over Ibiza 2017 and tell us about some of the best tracks from Ibiza this year.

There was a lot of change heading into the Ibiza 2017 clubbing season. Space was no more, replaced by Hï Ibiza, complete with a full new timetable of weekly events including residencies from some of the biggest DJs in dance music, such as Armin Van Buuren and Eric Prydz. Across the island lots of familiar nights remained at various renowned clubs (some jumped ship from one club to another), whilst there were some great new event additions.

The super clubs on the island were open every night from the opening parties in May through to the upcoming closing parties in October and it was at these clubs where the biggest tracks of the summer were heard. Here in no particular order are some of Ibiza 2017’s best tunes…

Camelphat – Hangin’ Out With Charlie

Scouse duo Camelphat’s break came in 2015 with “Constellations”, a track which became an Ibiza anthem, being played everywhere from Salinas to Sankeys by way of the iconic Café Mambo.

The lads have had a ridiculously good 2017 too, with their track “Cola” (with Elderbrook) being one of the catchiest vocals around. Their track “Hangin’ Out With Charlie”, a vocal tech house banger, has been one of Ibiza’s most played this summer, most notably at Do Not Sleep’s Cuckooland pool parties on Sundays at Ibiza Rocks Hotel, as well as their own various sets around the island.

Patrice Bäumel – Glutes

“Glues” is a brilliant techno track with an amazing warm and melodic sound. It has had a lot of plays at Ibiza’s various venues this summer, not least by Patrice himself at Afterlife parties on Thursday’s at Privilege. Glutes is a track that sounds amazing through Privilege’s massive crisp and clear speakers. 2017 was the year that the world’s biggest club was back in business. As well as undergoing a modern refurbishment, new inside and out/gardens, Privilege also hosted Carl Cox’s 2 residency nights on the island in July. Added to that, it was the only place on the island to see Sasha & Digweed play together at Resistance on Tuesdays.

Gorillaz – We Got The Power (Claptone Remix)

Claptone’s rise has been on the ascendancy for the past few years with notable tracks and remixes, none more so than his remix of Gregory Porter’s “Liquid Spirit” in 2015, which was one of the biggest tracks on the island that year. This summer he’s been back at it again with his vocal house remix of “We Got The Power” from Gorillaz new album.

It was an important track at BBC Ibiza Radio 1 weekend as he played it during his live on-air set, as well as his gigs at other events around the island – at Together and Elrow (both at Amnesia), and Defected In The House at Eden. If you’ve been in Ibiza this summer, you’ll no doubt have seen Claptone’s 9 super-sized signature masks at the airport!

London Grammar – Hell to the Liars (Kölsch Remix)

Kölsch has been one of Ibiza’s favorite DJs for the past few years. In 2015 he made a name for himself and has continued apace in both 2016 and 2017, making several more appearances on the White Isle. Kölsch himself describes his sound as “romantic techno”, which sums his track “Grey” up perfectly, which was, without doubt, the tune of Ibiza 2016.

His remix of London Grammar’s “Hell To The Liars” has been one of the largest Ibiza 2017 tracks, as he played it live during his appearances at the likes of Ants @ Ushuaia and In The Dark at Hï Ibiza.

Eric Prydz – Liberate (Eric Prydz 2017 Remix)

Not many things come close in electronic music to seeing Eric Prydz live. Prydz’ sets generally include lots of tough tech and progressive tracks, combined with beautiful melodies a plenty, and switching between his Cirez D persona throughout.

Although making lots of performances on the island over the years at the likes of Cream Ibiza, 2017 saw Prydz hold his first ever Ibiza residency, on Tuesdays at Hï Ibiza. Each week he performed to the brilliant Theatre room, combined with ambient and striking green lasers taking the crowd on a beautiful musical journey.

He’s been playing some absolutely brilliant tracks all summer at his residency, including his driving new remix of his classic track from a few years ago, Liberate.
