After becoming one of the winners of the RED Emerging Music Artist Contest last year, things have gone from good to great for Fly By Midnight. We caught up with one half of the duo Justin, to see what they have been up to and find out what 2018 holds for them. It sounds like quite the year ahead…

Tell us what you’ve been up to since winning the RED Emerging Music Artist Contest?

Thanks for touching base again! Since winning we’ve been busy as ever. Over the holidays there was a lot of family time, but also a ton of planning for how to make this year an important one in our careers. We have been feeling very inspired as well. Sometimes taking a bit of time off really cleans out the mind. Slavo and I have been writing music that really dives into what we want to say more than we ever have before.

Tell us about your new single Malibu?

“Malibu” has to be one of my favorite singles we’ve released. It’s a song that came together so effortlessly and oozes nostalgia. The response we’ve had about the song has been unreal, as well as the recent radio love. Hearing it on rotation on Sirius XM & Mix 104.1 Boston has been a real eye opening moment for the project. Slavo and I are more creatively charged than ever and I think it will show in our future releases.

And where did the inspiration for the song come from?

The song title and the story of the song were actually two completely separate inspirations. Slavo came up with the title “Malibu” before the song was even written. We had just got back from a trip to China, performing for the announcement of the Chevrolet Malibu. After he had built the production we forgot about it for a while. Months later we pulled it up out of pure curiosity and I was immediately drawn to a story of mine from high school. Long story short, I had spent a few nights with a girl who I felt was completely out of my league. So much so that the time we spent together almost felt cinematic! Slavo and I began writing around that concept more and it developed into a song that feels relatable yet rom-com worthy as well.

What else does 2018 hold for you?

We were recently announced on the bill to play Firefly Festival this summer with some insane headliners (Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys). Getting that news really started 2018 on a high note. We have a lot of music just waiting to be released. Our next single drops soon. We don’t want to give away too much, but it’s a different one for us. It’s called “Just Say It” and it’s going to give fans of ours a feeling I don’t think they’re used to getting from our music. We are also in talks for some really exciting tours that I can’t go into yet, but I think its safe to say this year will be a year of progression and that’s all we can ask for!

Tell us what’s on your playlist this season?

Lately we’ve been listening to…

Maroon 5’s “Denim Jacket”

This track is definitely a stand out off of their new album. A lot of fans have been asking for a song that felt a bit more like their older work and I think this song blends both their modern sound with vibes of “Sunday Morning”. Conceptually its descriptive enough to really immerse you in the story.

Dan + Shay’s “Tequila”

This is track is also very narrative driven. I guess after listening to these tracks it’s obvious to see the inspiration Fly By Midnight draws from. I love how this song’s title is deceiving. I’ll leave it at that. Really awesome song.

Ellie Goulding’s “Still Falling For You”

This song went under the radar in my opinion. It was a movie track for the last Bridget Jones movie (which I didn’t see!), but the song is just great. It gets me excited for what Ellie Goulding has next up her sleeve. Quick shout out to the warm vibes from the initial keys that come in.
