Glasgow

Glasgow loves to shop. That’s pretty much self-evident. But, away from the malls and pedestrianised thoroughfares of the centre there are the gorgeous, scrubbed-up 18th century warehouses of Merchant City, home to swish boutiques, the bo-ho neighborhoods where made-in-Glasgow art and fashion jostle for your attention, and the busy markets where Glasgow commerce continues pretty much as it’s always done.

If big names and international brands are your thing, the sleek Buchanan Galleries, where Sauchiehall and Buchanan Street meet, should be on your shopping list. There’s a huge John Lewis here, and high street favourites such as Hollister, Pandora and Vans. ‘The ‘Style Mile’ around Buchanan St, Argyle St and Merchant City is a fashion hub busting at the ever-so-tailored seams.

Things get a touch more interesting in the handsome Princes Square shopping centre, with its Art Nouveau flourishes, and the excellent Scottish Craft Centre, which has an outstanding collection of work – from Harris tweed to gorgeous Sheila Fleet jewellery, made in the Orkney Isles (48 Buchanan Street). And it gets way more bohemian in the West End, around Byres Road.
